Early Olympic success for RB Farquhar bathroom pods

RB Farquhar, Europe’s leading manufacturer of prefabricated bathroom pods, has (Dec 2009) announced a £3 million contract award for the new £2bn Olympic Village being constructed in east London for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The contract, awarded by major UK construction group John Sisk & Son Ltd, is for 640 bathroom and shower-room pods for plots 9 and 10 of the most spacious accommodation complex in Olympic history.

The Olympic Village, whose planning involved detailed input from athletes, comprises 62 blocks of residential apartments to house 17,000 athletes and officials at the Games, along with shops, restaurants, medical, media and leisure facilities and large areas of open space.

Covering an area of 91 acres (the equivalent of 37 football pitches), the Olympic Village will later house 6,000 athletes and officials for the Paralympic Games, before being adapted into 2,800 permanent new homes, including 1,379 affordable homes for the east London community.

The RB Farquhar bathroom pod contract covers three different levels of specifications for the bathroom and shower-room pods – Intermediate, Market and Social.  The Village apartments include wireless internet, networking and other state-of-the-art technologies, and were designed by PRP Architects Ltd (Plot N09) and Eric Parry Architects (Plot N10), two of the forty-seven individual architectural practices working on the huge Olympic Village project.

“High-volume projects like the Olympic Village which are working to tight construction deadlines are ideal subjects for factory-assembled bathroom pods,” explains Patrick McDonald, managing director with RB Farquhar Manufacturing.

“Prefabrication of bathroom pods has been shown to deliver substantial cost savings over traditional site installation methods, and our unrivalled twenty-year track record in this field gives our clients reassurance in our ability to assemble and deliver on time against even the most challenging schedules.”

“We are now actively pursuing other Olympic Village contracts, and hope that we can win further awards for this uniquely prestigious construction showpiece project.”

The Olympic Village bathroom and shower-room pods are being manufactured in RB Farquhar’s custom-built assembly plant in Chomutov, in the Czech Republic.  Opened in 2003, this modern plant produces over 10,000 pods every year – approximately one pod every 15 minutes coming off the assembly lines.

RB Farquhar is also shortly due (late 2009) to open its second bathroom pod assembly plant, in Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates.
