Continental European debut for RB Farquhar and City Inn Hotels

Bathroom pod manufacturer RB Farquhar has started site deliveries of floorless shower pods to its first contract on mainland Europe – the new City Inn Hotel in Amsterdam.

Over the next six months, 465 shower pods worth around £2.14 million are being shipped from RB Farquhar’s custom-built bathroom pod assembly plant in Chomutov, in the Czech Republic, to the development, which is the biggest hotel to be built in the Netherlands to date.

The hotel is one of the key elements of the The Oosterdokseiland project (ODE), one of the biggest urban development projects in Europe, with over 200,000sq.m of mixed housing, commercial and leisure buildings being constructed on a riverside island site next to Amsterdam’s Centraal Station which was the former sorting centre of PTT Post.

As well as the new hotel, the ODE development also includes a convention centre, public library, music academy and many shops, restaurants and bars.

This is the third bathroom pod contract awarded to RB Farquhar by City Inn Hotels, following the production of 300 pods for City Inn Leeds in 2008 and a concurrent 584 shower and bathroom pod contract in 2009 for City Inn’s second London hotel, located next to the Tower of London.

“Although we have had our main bathroom pod assembly plant on mainland Europe since 2003, we are delighted to be sharing our continental project debut with City Inn Hotels,” said Patrick McDonald, managing director of RB Farquhar Manufacturing.

“Although we have seen major growth in our UK and Irish markets in the last six years, our strategic plan in establishing an assembly plant in Central Europe was always to break into the mainstream continental markets.”

London-based City Inn Hotels was founded in 1995 following extensive research into the requirements of business travellers.  The company now operates six upmarket hotels in Bristol, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, London and Leeds, and has won a number of travel awards for its pioneering contemporary design and stylish features, including “fresh” air conditioning and advanced multimedia entertainment systems.

Announcing the launch of the flagship Amsterdam hotel, Sandy Orr, City Inn’s executive chairman, said: “This is a momentous occasion for our private British company as it is our first international development and it is in one of the most important locations in one of Europe’s most historic and modern cities.”

The main contractor for the City Inn Amsterdam is Bouwfonds MAB Ontwikkeling B.V., and the architect is BDG Architecten Ingenieurs Almere.
